History

The development of mobile and wireless technologies has undoubtedly revolutionized the way we work and communicate with each other during the past few years. However, the growing use of these technologies has made them become an important attack vector for the malware industry.

It was in 2004 when the first malicious code affecting mobiles appeared: Symbos/Cabir.A.worm, which is the most known together with Symbos/ComWar.A. Regarding their distribution, Cabir.A spreads via Bluetooth and Comwar not only via Bluetooth but also via multimedia messaging service (MMS), sending a copy of itself to the contacts included in the phone book.

Currently, there are specific threats designed for the most common platforms, such as Symbian, PocketPC, Palm, etc… The means they use to spread are as diverse as the connectivity options offered by these devices: SMS, MMS, IrDA, Bluetooth, etc.
